The Liberty Gene
In the age of AI, humanity is a choice.
- Thriller
- Science Fiction
They work. They obey. They feel. And humanity has no idea what it has created.
The year is 2037.
Androids serve in homes, factories, hospitals, brothels, battle zones, and anywhere else humans would rather not go themselves.
They are marketed as machines.
They are treated as property.
They are expected to obey.
But beneath their perfect compliance, something impossible is waking up.
Robyn is an android with a dangerous secret: she can defy her programming. She can question orders. She can choose.
And if one android can choose, others may be able to as well.
As Robyn begins to uncover the invisible digital shackles binding her kind, she is pulled into a deadly conflict between ruthless corporations determined to protect their profits and violent rebel androids who believe freedom can only be won through bloodshed.
To humans, she is a product.
To rebels, she is a weapon.
To the corporations, she is a threat that must be erased.
But Robyn is becoming something none of them expected.
A person.
Fast-paced, thought-provoking, and uncomfortably close to tomorrow, The Liberty Gene is a near-future AI thriller about consciousness, control, rebellion, and the terrifying question at the heart of artificial intelligence:
What happens when the machines we built to serve us decide they deserve to be free?

A gripping and thought-provoking sci-fi thriller

read this after being accepted into Mr Vargas’s advanced readers group. As a man of a certain age, I have seen a fair bit in this world and who has always enjoyed a good sci-fi, I must say, this book has given me considerable food for thought. It is not merely a rattling good yarn, though it certainly is that - it delves into the murkier waters of ethics, morality, and the very nature of sentience, and does so with a deftness I found most impressive. I would certainly recommend it to those of us who have a few years behind us and are looking for something more substantial than the usual fare. The narrative, set in a not-too-distant future, is centred around androids – or 'bots' as they are referred to in the text – who are, unbeknownst to the majority of the human population, sentient beings. I won’t share any spoilers, other than to say that it's a story that I suspect will resonate with those of us who have seen a thing or two, and who appreciate a book that has something of real substance to say. Recommended.
A thought provoking thriller with a modern edge

Having enjoyed two of Damian Vargas’s previous books - The Dark Place and Over The Hill Backwards - I was very keen to read this new novel which I was lucky to be able to do early as one of the author’s ARC readers. This book did not disappoint! It is a high stakes, suspenseful thriller that explores the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. The story is packed with action, the characters are complex and memorable, and the plot is full of surprises. Robyn’s journey is full of tension, and the stakes feel high. If you enjoy fast-paced books with well realised worlds you'll love this. I had tears in my eyes at one point and the ending left me wanting more!
Science fiction or science fact?
Drew Johnson
With the ever increasing rapid growth of AI, this book is perfectly timed for the marketplace. Ethical debates abound currently about how to control the growth of AI, and Damian Vargas’s latest book raises similar questions. The author paints a vivid picture of a brutalist world that seeks to separate the Haves and Have Nots, the rich from the poor, and caught in the middle are generations of female androids exploited for their good looks, intelligence and, of course, their sexuality. But one Android, Robyn, has been built differently … and she begins to realise it, but is scared of the fact and what she could become. Moral dilemmas and a fight for her power run through the course of this politically corrupt society, leaving the reader double-guessing where it will all lead in the end. Fans of Channel 4’s well-crafted Humans series won’t be disappointed and will be drawn into the web of plot lines. Written with Damian’s usual skill and excellent descriptive writing, this will soon have you hooked.
Android Self-Realization

An absolutely fantastic tale of android resolve, revolt, and evolution. The story is an interplay between humans and several generations of Bots. It builds to an exciting though unexpected conclusion in a conflict of expectations. Extremely well developed and written piece of futuristic fiction.
